Healing vs. Integration: Why Reclaiming Lost Parts of Ourselves is Key to Wholeness (with a Tantric Twist)

Have you ever felt like you’ve done a lot of healing work—maybe through therapy, journaling, or spiritual practices—but still feel like something’s missing? Like there’s more to uncover about who you really are? That’s where integration comes in. It’s the next step after healing, and it’s all about taking back the parts of ourselves we’ve forgotten or pushed aside.

Lately, I’ve been exploring how this ties into Tantra, and it’s been a game-changer for how I see myself and my personal growth. Tantra has shown me how to not just heal my wounds but embrace all the different pieces of who I am—the light, the dark, and everything in between.

Let’s dive into what healing and integration really mean, and how Tantra can help us feel whole again.

Healing: Mending the Wounds

We all know healing is important. It’s the process of dealing with emotional or mental wounds—whether it’s from childhood, a bad relationship, or just life’s many curveballs. Healing often looks like working through pain, unpacking trauma, and letting go of old baggage that’s been weighing us down.

But here’s the thing: even after all the healing, we can still feel incomplete, right? It’s like we’ve cleared out some of the pain but haven’t fully stepped into who we really are. That’s because healing alone isn’t enough. We also need to integrate.

Integration: Bringing Back the Lost Parts

While healing helps us feel lighter, integration is about making ourselves whole again. It’s about reclaiming all the parts of us that we’ve tucked away or disowned. These parts often live in what Carl Jung called the shadow—those aspects of ourselves we’ve pushed into the background because we think they don’t fit with who we “should” be.

For example, maybe growing up you were taught to hide your emotions or suppress your creative side because it wasn’t “practical.” Or maybe you’ve buried your sensuality because it didn’t align with what you thought was acceptable. Over time, these aspects get lost in the shadow, but they’re still a part of you, waiting to be brought back to the surface.

What blew my mind is learning that only about 10% of our shadow is made up of the negative stuff we’re afraid of—things like anger or jealousy. The other 90% is pure gold. This “gold” represents our hidden talents, passions, creativity, and personal power. When we integrate these parts of ourselves, we unlock a fuller version of who we truly are.

How Tantra Helps Us Integrate

Tantra has been an amazing framework for me when it comes to this whole idea of integration. A lot of people think Tantra is just about sex, but really, it’s a spiritual path that’s all about wholeness—embracing every part of life as sacred. Tantra teaches that everything inside us—whether it’s light or dark, emotional or physical—is part of our divine nature and should be honored.

In my own experience, Tantra has helped me stop labeling parts of myself as “good” or “bad” and start accepting myself as a whole being. Instead of feeling ashamed of my desires, emotions, or even my anger, I’ve learned to see them as sacred and valuable. Tantra reminds me that these disowned parts of ourselves can be powerful forces of growth when we allow them to come to the surface and be seen.

The Shadow: More Than Just Darkness

What really stood out for me on this journey is realizing that the shadow isn’t just full of our “negative” traits—it’s mostly filled with the gifts we’ve hidden away. For example, I used to see my sensitivity as a weakness, something I needed to toughen up. But through shadow work, I’ve started to see my sensitivity as a gift—it allows me to connect deeply with others, understand emotions on a profound level, and tap into creativity.

Tantra has taught me to reclaim these parts of myself as sacred, not shameful. Our sexual energy, for instance, isn’t just about pleasure; it’s a source of life force that fuels creativity, passion, and spiritual growth. When we suppress parts of ourselves—whether it’s our desires, our emotions, or our creativity—we’re also shutting down a huge source of personal power.

Why Integration Matters

Authenticity: Through integration, we get to show up in life as our full, authentic selves—no masks, no filters. I’ve found that the more I reclaim those hidden parts, the more confident and real I feel.

Empowerment: When we take back the aspects of ourselves that we’ve buried, we become more empowered. Whether it’s creativity, sensuality, or inner strength, these hidden traits give us the tools we need to live more fully. Tantra has shown me that reclaiming these parts is like stepping into my own divine power.

Emotional Freedom: By integrating our shadow, we stop projecting our issues onto others and start owning our feelings. We’re no longer triggered by the things we’ve disowned because we’ve made peace with them. This emotional freedom is one of the biggest gifts of integration.

Connecting with the Divine: One of the beautiful things about Tantra is how it teaches us to see ourselves as divine beings. When we integrate our shadow, we not only reclaim our power, we also deepen our connection to our own sacred nature.

How to Start Integrating (with a Tantric Twist)

Self-Reflection: Begin by asking yourself, “What parts of me have I been hiding?” or “What qualities have I rejected?” Journaling or talking to a trusted friend can help you uncover these shadow aspects. Tantra also suggests using body awareness and meditation to tap into the parts of ourselves that are often hidden.

Shadow Work: Shadow work is all about bringing those unconscious parts of ourselves into the light. Tantra encourages us to embrace these parts with love and compassion, rather than judgment. It’s about welcoming everything, even the uncomfortable parts, as part of our journey toward wholeness.

Tantric Practices: Tantra offers tools like breathwork, meditation, and sacred movement to help us balance our inner energies and bring all parts of ourselves back into alignment. These practices have helped me reconnect with my body and emotions, allowing for deeper integration.

Celebrate Your Gold: Recognize that the hidden parts of yourself—the creativity, the passion, the power—are your gifts. Celebrate them! Tantra teaches us that these aspects are expressions of the divine, meant to be embodied fully and fearlessly.

By embracing every part of who we are, we step into a fuller, more vibrant version of ourselves. Whether it’s through Tantra, shadow work, or just deep self-reflection, integrating these lost parts is a powerful way to reclaim our wholeness.
